1. Gemstone Hunting
There are many rocks, minerals, and crystals for rockhounds to find in Virginia. If you want to mine for gemstones, Pittsylvania Wayside Park is the place for you. Here, you can use sluice boxes to sift through gravel for your favorite gems. The park is also home to a historical swinging bridge, a destination playground, walking trails, and picnic shelters.
While eastern Virginia isn’t as mineralized as other areas of the state, it’s still a good place for rockhounding. River and stream gravels often contain collectible rocks like agates and smoky quartz. Old mines and prospects are also known for containing high-quality unakite, a metamorphosed granite that’s popular among collectors who create cabochons. The Axton pegmatite district is a particular gem mining site to check out.
2. Hanging Bridge
The wooden hanging bridge at Wayside Park Hurt VA is a fun attraction for kids of all ages. This unique structure was built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as part of a series of seven waysides across Virginia.
The bridge stretches over Sycamore Creek and has a beautiful view of the water. It is a great spot to see wildlife in the area, and it also offers hiking trails for visitors.
Located at 1678 Main Street, Hurt, VA 24563, Wayside Park features walking and hiking trails, a historic swinging bridge, a destination playground, pickleball courts, an amphitheater, and a rentable pavilion. The park is also home to the county’s newest LOVE sign which was created by PCTC students and their welding instructor.
3. Playground
Located at 1678 Main Street in Hurt, Pittsylvania Wayside Park is a great place for families. This large park has a destination playground, walking and hiking trails, a historic swinging bridge, a LOVE sign, and an amazing zipline. It also has picnic shelters and outdoor pickleball courts. You can even wade in Seneca Creek here!
The “E” is fabricated out of steel and resembles the steel support structure of the 75-foot-tall train trestle sitting across Main Street from the sign. Trains coming down the tracks can be seen and heard from the park as well!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pittsylvania County has temporarily closed all public playgrounds and park shelters including those at Titan, Hawk, Wildcat, Cavalier, and the playground at Wayside Park. However, the paved walking trails in those parks as well as Wayside Park will remain open to the public. A great place to also visit is Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina.
4. Restrooms
Located in Hurt, Pittsylvania Wayside Park is one of the county’s public parks. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, the park features walking trails in the woods, a historic swinging bridge, and stacked stone abutments crossing Sycamore Creek, a destination playground, and much more.
The park’s newest addition is a huge LOVE sign that was installed on April 2. The “O” of the sign is built with brick to represent the smokestack at the adjacent former Klopman Mills textile manufacturing plant, which was brought down in January 2020.
The back of the heart features the names of Pittsylvania County Career and Technical Center students that researched, designed, and built the sign. It also acknowledges businesses that helped make the sign a reality.
5. Picnic Shelter
Bryce Adkins, a Gretna boy scout, completed an Eagle Scout project at Wayside Park in Pittsylvania County. He and his troop replaced the steps leading from the historical swinging bridge into the picnic pavilion. This is an important part of the park and will be included in a major renovation later this year.
Pittsylvania County’s newest LOVE sign greets visitors at the 50-acre Wayside Park in Hurt. The “L” is built with brick to resemble the smokestack at the nearby former Klopman Mills textile plant that was brought down in January 2020. The center of the sign features a graphic of the iconic swinging bridge with stacked stone abutments traversing Sycamore Creek in the park.
