Falling Creek Park

Falling Creek Park Bedford VA is a fantastic spot for mountain biking, disc golf, a skate park, and much more. It has an awesome trail network that is great for beginner to advanced riders.

Another great thing to do is the National D-Day Memorial. This eye-catching & powerful monument is located in Bedford County. It honors the town that proportionately suffered the highest loss of lives on D-Day. Read this first!

Disc Golf

Bedford County has a growing disc golf culture that’s drawing attention from national tournament organizers. Play a round on one of the five public courses available free for players of all skill levels. The new 18-hole course at the New London Business and Technology Center Park was designed by Paul McBeth, a six-time world champion disc golfer.

The largely open course has large cedars defining fairways and creating tight gaps. The red layout is beginner friendly, while the yellow course offers a challenge to advanced players.

Bring the kids and a picnic lunch to the large pavilion and spend a day exploring the park’s hiking/biking trails, 18-hole disc golf course, children’s playground, Life Trail Fitness Stations, and skate park. In the evening, head to the park for a family-friendly movie under the stars. Then, if you’re still up for it, come back and play a few rounds of disc golf! The lighted course will be open until midnight.

Mountain Biking

The Roanoke Valley is home to mountain bike trails that can provide a short half-hour ride or a day of adventure. The 35-mile Virginia Creeper Trail in Abingdon stretches over more than 100 trestles and bridges. It’s a great bike path for beginners and experts alike.

In Bedford, our local park is home to 10 miles of multi-use trails designed for hiking, mountain biking and trail running. Highlights include the Dody Ridge Mountain Bike Trail, a more advanced and difficult mountain bike loop.

For those who want to take a break from the trails, there’s a Mountain Biking Park that features pump tracks and jumps. It’s a great place for BMX riders to hone their skills, increase confidence, and progress to new skill levels. It’s a fun way to spend an hour or two and it’s free! Just make sure to wear a helmet. The park is open from dawn to dusk. It is closed on holidays and when the weather is inclement. Check it out here.

Skate Park

If you want to see some amazing skateboard tricks check out the Skate Park at Falling Creek Park. The facility is a concrete skateboard park built by Team Pain with two separate bowls, hips, escalating pockets, and more. One of the bowls is advanced vert and features extensions, a spine ramp, and a five to seven-foot pocket. The street course has flat ledges, a manual pad, a bump to the bar, rails, and a Euro gap.

Mountain bikers will love the park’s challenging trail experiences and can also practice their skills in the skills area, a sand pit, or a log ride. While in Bedford, take a break from the outdoors and visit one of the county’s many shops and restaurants. For lunch, head to downtown Bedford for options like Azul (Tex-Mex) or Town Kitchen & Provisions (sandwiches with fun names like Friar Cluck and Loretta Lynn). Then grab a six-pack from Beale’s a local craft brewery.

Playground

Enjoy hiking, biking, and playing disc golf at this park with a large pavilion, picnic areas, and a playground. There are also 2 miles of hiking and biking trails to explore.

The park sits on the site of the first American Ironworks established by the Virginia Company of London in 1619. Timbers were exposed in 2004 after heavy rains flooded the area and subsequent archaeological work has shown these to be timbers from Archibald Cary’s forge.

The County’s investment in the park is evident with more than a dozen hiking trails ranging from one-quarter mile to two miles and a mountain bike park that boasts a skills loop, pump track, and skinny riding opportunities as well as an advanced vert bowl. Visiting the park is also a good opportunity to check out what many call the state’s best skate park. The 17,500 square-foot skate park features a flow-style mix of banks, flip banks, ledges, rainbow rails, benches, and two separate bowls. Continue reading the next article.
